Dear Family and Friends,

At my age I don’t expect really cool birthday gifts but yesterday I got the best belated gift ever, a call from NASA. To recap the situation, NASA conducted 2nd interviews with 40 individuals from the original pool of ~120 candidates. I went on the first interview but didn’t make the second…at least I didn’t think so until yesterday. At ~8am my phone rang. At first I thought it was my mom because she’s the only person who ever calls me early in the morning. I didn’t recognize the number so I just answered it. When I heard it was Teresa Gomez calling from NASA I nearly dropped the phone. NASA decided to invite 7 more individuals for second interviews the week of April 19th – 26th. Words cannot fully express what this phone call means to me. But, I did do a lot of jumping up and down when I got off the phone. Okay, maybe I started jumping while still talking to Mrs. Gomez.

When I look back at the process that has brought me to this particular point in my life I think of family support and the encouragement of colleagues, mentors, teachers, and friends (like you). I also think about my own determination, persistence, and desire to learn and experience the world around me. I wasn’t sure how people would react to me blogging about my adventures. Actually, I didn’t think anyone would really care about what I was doing (except for my mom). I now realize how wrong I was and I want to thank you all for making my journey into the cyber world welcoming. Your support and words of encouragement have fueled me to move forward and have faith in the direction I am going and the choices I have made. Regardless of the outcome I hope you all keep supporting space exploration and NASA’s missions. I hope to continue to lead by example and encourage everyone (young and old) to engage in lifelong learning and to reach for the impossible…because the reality is…anything is possible! The candles on the cake prove that theory.

Thanks!
Sian

I’m looking good at 29!! Thanks to Jia, my roommate, for the awesome birthday cake. Photo by Nooccar

  1. Congratualtions, Sian!!! Never has “You go, girl!” been more appropriate!

The NASA competition is unreal. You have already reached the top — now it’s like the Olympics when the decisions are made based on hundreths of a second differences in speed. I’m holding my breath for the next news.

  2. Sian–what fantastic news! We’re celebrating with you! Yippee!!!!

  3. YAHOO! Go girl! You never cease to amaze me. Happy Belated B-day!

  20. Sian,
I’m so happy for you again! :) Well, life is full of surprises when you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing and when you have such a positive outlook as yourself! This is also an encouragement to me to let me know that we need to continue to do what we believe is right and not faint because in due season we will reap the benefits of allowing our tamed hearts to do God’s good and perfect will!! Carry on , sister!!!

  21. WOW! You go and show them what an Arizona girl can do! Congratulations!

  22. Yeah, yeah. That NASA thing is cool, but 29? Somebody’s miscounting some years here. 29? I’m betting last year’s cake said 29 and next year’s will too! :)

  23. You are looking good at 29 plus and congratulations on your second review. I would only say, do not allow NASA or anyone other than yourself to determine what is success. Failure to do so, could bring dissapointment and tears to your heart. Keep living and looking good at 29. Congratulations!

  24. WOW WOW AND WOW BUT OF COURSE WE EXPECTED THEM TO COME TO THEIR SENSES…KEEP ON CLIMBING… THE SKY IS MORE THAN THE LIMIT NOW…PAULA AND ALL OF THE PHX 99s

  25. Sian,
I find it extremely rewarding to know you and to know you will eventually be in the ISS looking down on the big blue marble we call home. One of the postings mentioned success… I read once that the meaning of success was to put a smile on someone’s face. I’m willing to bet that everyone that knows you is smiling now.

  26. Unreal!!!!!! Kill that interview.

  39. Hi Sian,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but I want you to know how thrilled I am that you got this second opportunity. We will miss you at the campus meeting Saturday, but, hey I’ve never gotten a better excuse for an absence. I hope you can make our last campus meeting. It’s another potluck.
