Day 1 at NASA
Jan 13th, 2009 | By Admin | Category: Current Topics of Interest, NASA Astronaut Selection 2009This morning I got on a plane and headed to my Interview at Johnson Space Center for the NASA Astronaut Program. I am really excited to be here and also in shock. I feel like harry potter when he finds out he’s a wizard and says, “I can’t be a wizard, I’m just harry!” It’s hard for me to imagine that all my hard work has led me here.
It turns out that 2 of the candidates, the other two females in the group, were on my connecting flight from Dallas but we didn’t sit together. I did share a cab ride with Liz who is a Naval Officer and a F-18 Super Hornet and Hornet WIZO (What’s a WIZO??? Just think of Mother Goose from Top Gun. You know, the backseater!).
I picked up my schedule when i arrived and here is the itinerary for tomorrow:
7:30am pick-up: all 20 candidates
8:00-9:30 Orientation
Then I get a three hour break
12:45-5:30 Psychological Evaluation
6:30 Social event with Astronauts!
My interview with the selection committee isn’t until Thursday afternoon which is great because it will give me time to recover from this terrible stomach flu I picked up over the weekend.
Later in the evening my group of 10 candidates got together and went to dinner and there are a surprising number of geologists in this group. There are also test pilots, a graduate student, and researchers. Everyone was really nice and, of course, amazing people with unique backgrounds.
I will try to blog everyday and add pictures too but there are no guarantees! I’m off to bed…I need my strength!

Biting my nails as I read your schedule and YESSSS! It is not too bad. (Roy and I have been worried about your first day if it will give you time to recover.) Just be yourself and they will fall in love with you (like we all did). Don’t forget to breath. I will be checking your site like every 5 minutes. You are one hour ahead of us so it is 10:30 and you are on a break. Tell as much as you can (when you have time), or better remember every detail. You know it is incredibly hard to be on the waiting side. So I appreciate how good of a blogger you are. What am I saying!!! HAVE FUN (but let us know what is going on).
Hey Sian
Congrats on your selection process! Don’t worry just be yourself and NASA will see that you are destin for the stars. It sounds very exciting and fun. I’m proud of you!
Good luck Cuz!

Well Harry, How is Hogswart?
You met 10 astronauts, WOW! Can’t wait to hear what you guys talked about.
Thank you for all Twitter updates. Eagerly waiting to hear rest of your magical adventures.
This is so great! I have butterflies for you, but I know you will do really well! I’m sure that everyone is anxiously awaiting news of how your interview went, and all about JSC. Go get ‘em, girl! May the space force be with you!
Anxious to hear the news. We are all on pins and needles. Especially Ali.
