I’ve decided to work on getting my ham radio license (Level 1 Technician). The reasons why I have chosen to get my license are simple: 1) I have always been curios about all aspects of the electromagnetic spectrum and how we can use it; 2) I find electronics challenging and want to become more competent in this area; 3) the idea of communicating with people all over the world sounds like fun; 4) I eventually want to use my experience and knowledge during emergency services; and 5) both the space shuttle and international space station have amateur radio equipment aboard (and maybe, if I am extremely luckily, I will actually become an astronaut).

I am currently halfway through my class and studying hard. In order to get my license I will have to pass a multiple choice test consisting of 35 questions. The test covers ham radio rules, basic electronics, and operating procedures. I don’t have any equipment yet but I’ve started looking at my options. Because I am so new to this field I would like to gain more knowledge about the appropriate equipment to fit my needs. If you are interested in learning more about ham radio I suggest you check out the ARRL website: http://www.wedothat-radio.org/. I will let you know in a couple of weeks if I have been successful in this quest and I am looking forward to getting my call sign!
