It is time to follow up on one of my very first blogs: Is TV friend or foe? You can read about it at my old, old, Mac web page: http://web.mac.com/doctor.proctor/Site/Blog/Entries/2008/3/4_Is_TV_Friend_or_Foe.html

But in a nutshell, one year ago I got rid of my television with the goal of going one year without it. So what have I accomplished without my TV? Well…in the past year I have created this web page, finished developing my card game, started writing a novel, made the top 120 for the astronaut program, and lost 15lbs. Not too shabby!!!

I will admit that my life has not been completely tv free. When I travel and stay in a hotel room I watch tv. When I go to a friends house I watch tv. And, the kicker, I have discovered Hulu.com and have watched the Daily Show, plus a few other shows, a couple times. Overall I think my tv viewing during the last year has been about 25 hours. Not bad considering I was spending +2 hours per night before getting rid of the box.

Will I go back to tv?? No. My time has been successfully filled with other things. Not making the astronaut cut this round has been crushing but, like Jodie Foster in Contact, I have been handed my hat but I’m not out of the game. If I am going to apply again then I have things to do and can’t be wasting my time watching tv. I will continue to catch a hulu.com episode here and there but, for the most part, I don’t miss my tv. I only feel the effects of it being gone when I am socializing with friends. It doesn’t take long before the conversation turns to some new tv program.

So what’s my plan…it’s simple really:
1) Get a MS degree in Space Studies…I’ve already applied to a few programs and been accepted at one.
2) Learn Russian
3) Get my instrument rating
4) Get my advanced SCUBA
5) Get my motorcycle license…sorry mom I just always wanted a motorcycle!!!
6) Publish my game
7) Finish my novel
8 ) Read as much as I can
9) Travel the world
10) Eventually become and astronaut

I want to thank all the people who have followed my blog and I want to give a special shout-out to all the international folks. Thanks! I hope to post more regularly soon.
