It is New Years Eve and we packed up our belongings and said goodbye to Ometepe. The first stop was the ferry back across lake Nicaragua. It was a beautiful day and the view of the volcanoes was terrific.

We are on our way to the Nicaraguan capital of Granada. In order to get there we need to take a local bus. This is our first real experience taking a local bus and we began by piling all our bags on top of the bus creating a huge pile on top and tremendously increasing the wind resistance!

The bus was packed with us and the locals. As you wait local vendors wind their way from the front of the bus to the back door selling all kinds of food and drinks. You can get everything from fried chicken in a bag to popcorn and nuts. I wasn’t hungry so I didn’t buy anything.

Downtown Granada has a real colonial feel and, of course, we were staying in the tourist section just west of the central square. There are plenty of restaurants and foreigners hanging out in this section of town. We were here for three nights and I felt comfortable walking the streets during the day and enjoyed hanging out and eating at the street side cafe’s and restaurants.

We rang in the New Year with an amazing pizza dinner, followed by drinks at a local cafe, and dancing. There were fireworks and everyone was friendly. The only disappointment was that most of the dance clubs were closed. We didn’t realize that New Years Eve is mostly spent with family and the big “going out” night is actually New Years day. However, we did find a dance club after lots of searching but they played mostly techno house music. We convinced the DJ to play some salsa and everyone hit the dance floor. I, however, crept out just past midnight and headed home. I’m obviously getting old!!!
