Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica
Jan 1st, 2009 | By Admin | Category: TravelToday we headed for Monteverde (the cloud forest) Costa, Rica. Almost immediately on our journey we ran into some roadside creatures. I have absolutely no idea what these creatures are called. If you know, please leave a comment below!

We loaded onto boats and headed across a human-made lake that is 200 feet deep. I brought along my lucky NASA! Although we just met as a group we are all getting along great. Verena is from Germany and Mike is from England. Unfortunately Mike lost his cool hat along the way…forgot it on the bus.
We arrived after a very long bus ride to our new home for the next two days. Don Taco hotel is located in Santa Elena (AKA Monteverde). The hotel sits on top of a hill and the town is just a short walk down. We were very lucky because the weather was absolutely terrific.

Once again our rooms were great. I shared a room with Sarah from New York. We had a little cabana with a patio. Check it out below:

We arrived in the late afternoon and our activities were limited for the day. I decided to go on the Don Juan Coffee Plantation Tour. I have a complicated relationship with coffee. I really enjoy drinking it but I don’t want to become dependent on caffeine so I limit my intake to once a week or every two weeks. I know there is caffeine free but that’s no fun!
I even got to meet Don Juan the owner of the coffee plantation and the face on the label.

The tour lasted for about 2 hours and our guide was very informative. We learned everything from growing coffee plants to harvesting and roasting. We also learned the difference between first and second class coffee. I also learned about the use of the ox cart and tasted freshly squeezed sugar cane…yummy!!

At the end of the tour we learned the difference between light and dark roasted coffee and we got a partying gift.
