When I went to bed Christmas night it was drizzling. I woke in the middle of the night to pouring rain. It down poured buckets of rain all night long. We woke up in the morning and it was still raining hard. We got picked up by the local guide to go white water rafting and it was still pouring rain. Our goal was to ride the class 4 rapids of el Toro (the bull) but mother nature had other plans. The continual down pour had turned el Toro into a true ragging class v bull and we were forced, for safety reasons, to go to Sarapiquina river instead.

Awesome time on the Sarapique River, Costa Rica

I had never been white water rafting and was looking forward the experience. My new friends, without my knowledge, named our group Hostile Attack, which was very kind and humbling, Our raft guide was named Carlos. He taught us the ends and outs of rafting safety before we trickled into the water. Our group, Hostile Attack, was one of four rafts. The muddy river was wide and swift. Our first set of rapids jump started my pulse….I loved it and was eager for more. By the half way point we were working well together and got our teamwork tested when Peter, from Poland, was hurled overboard in the middle of a strong rapid section. He went under the raft and emerged, after a long dreadful pause, on the other side of the boat. We managed to get him successfully back in the boat while still running the rapids without any major problems…a real team highlight.

The next big test came when we side swiped a large swell and nearly tipped the whole raft! Some how we balanced back to neutral without even loosing anyone. Boy, my heart was pounding…very cool. At the end of our run it started down pouring. We were cold and drenched and eagerly munched on the fruit they had waiting for us. Overall it was a lot of fun and I can’t wait to go again someday.
