Soaring The Day Away

I went for my first glider flight while in Germany. I’ve always wanted to try it and Stephan arranged for me to fly with the NATO flying club. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to go flying and I am so lucky to have gotten this opportunity. Thomas, my glider pilot, is a NATO AWACS pilot who also flew fighter jets. He has over 10,000 hours. He’s a really nice guy. We soared to about 4,000 feet. I flew for just over an hour and it was a beautiful day. It was really interesting learning the dynamics of flying gliders and I am tempted to get my glider license. Stephan also flew. Both flights were awesome! The video below documents our experience.

My Interview on Geospatial Technology

This is a long interview I did on geospatial technology for the Geospatial Technology Center at Del Mar College. I was one of the NSF funded iGETT (Integrated Geospatial Education and Technology Training) cohorts. It was a great experience and I gained a lot of knowledge & skills in geospatial technology because of this program.

German Summer 2010

I am spending the summer in Brigden, Germany with my boyfriend Stephan. Brigden is a neighboring municipality of Gangelt and is located in western Germany on the Netherlands border.

Stephan is a German officer in the Air Force. He is assigned to the NATO Airbase and is a Tactical Director on the AWACS. You can see the runway for the NATO base in the satellite image above. Stephan and I met at the Miramar Air Show in 2008 but didn’t start dating until almost a year later when he randomly appeared on my Facebook chat.

Brigden is a German village with approximately 3,000 inhabitants. The village is surrounded by farmland. When I go for my morning walks I find myself in giant fields surrounded by tri-tipped windmills. The village of Brigden is in the background. It is really easy to get around by foot, bike, or car. The satellite image below shows the path of one of my walks.

When I arrived at the Düsseldorf airport I quickly realized that my luggage was not leaving with me. However, British Airways does compensate travelers by allowing them to buy a new outfit for a reasonable price. Reasonably priced clothes is almost impossible to find. My new jeans and shirt cost 85 euros but most of the jeans I tried on were over 100 euros! My new jeans went great with Stephan’s new motorcycle. The weather has been perfect for riding so off we went.

I came to Germany with the mindset that I would work out and eat sensible meals. That was until Stephan took me to an ice cream shop. OMG, I am in heaven and hell out the same time. Heaven because I love ice cream and hell because I actually have to choose something. I sit there for 20 minutes trying to decide what to get. I know whatever I choose will taste great and if it doesn’t, I can always eat Stephans!

It just happened to work out that I am in Germany for the World Cup Soccer Match. I told Stephan that I would root for Germany as long as they are not playing the U.S. However, I didn’t realize how much the Germans love soccer. There are flags everywhere and places for public viewing of the matches. Stephan made sure I had the right look for the game.

Drinking and Germany go hand-in-hand. For every goal that Germany scored we got a free beer. The final result of Germany vs. Australia was 4-0 in favor of Germany. I’m not a big drinker so I only had one beer, but we also biked the 5 miles from Stephan’s place to the public viewing of the game.

First Walk in Germany

This morning I went for an exploration walk around Stephan’s village. Just a few steps out the door and I am in the country. It’s hard to describe just how beautiful the landscape is here. USS Vandenberg in 1966

My father was on the USS Vandenberg in 1966. This is a picture of him on the ship. I am curious as to who the gentlemen is in the photo with my father. If anyone was on the ship in 66 and you know who this is, please e-mail me. Thanks!

New Hiking Program: RunKeeper

Today I started using a new program to track my hiking. It’s called My Runkeeper. I hiked South Mountain Preserve and was really happy with the results. Below is the route map I hiked. You can also see statistical data on start and end time, how far we hiked, our pace, and how high we climbed (742 feet). But, for me, the best part is the map. The program is free but they do offer a pro version for $9.99. If I am really happy with the results I may upgrade in the fall.

Thanksgiving 2009

I hosted Thanksgiving dinner at my house this year and invited my good friends Diana, Lisa, and Mike. It’s been a while since I hosted the big day and I hadn’t cooked a big bird in a long long time. But, once a cook – always a cook, and I am happy to report that the turkey came out great. After dinner we played Mahjong. My guests had never played before but they caught on quickly. It was a really great thanksgiving and a I am grateful for my good friends and awesome family. Diana took all the pictures and, as a result, she’s not in any of them
